: Actually it's called the saddle. The nut's way up there at the top of the fingerboard. The thing which runs through the tailpiece over the saddle and around the endpin is also called the tailgut. You should consider using an aircraft cable instead of heavy gauge wire for your tailgut. It opens up the sound of the bass. Lemurmusic.com sells such a kit. The length of the string from the bridge to the tailpiece (where the strings attach) should be 1/6th the length of the string from the bridge to the nut.
