: Help......
: I've just acquired a broken 2 X bass with all the pieces (including the strings) separated. I'm now ready to put the strings back on but I'm not sure which string is meant for E A D or G. They are a non-matched set, which makes it even more difficult to judge. I will try and describe what I've got>>>
: - a wound string (silver colour)
: - a wound string (silver colour) - slightly thinner gauge
: - a gut string (reddish brown colour)- approx same thickness as the one above
: - a thick opaquey plastic string( nylon - I think!)(thickest of the 4)

: I would be more than willing to do some individual thickness measurements if that helped anyone to help me. Perhaps I should just string them up one by one and see if they will tighten up to pitch - but I'm a bit worried about over-tightening and stressing the neck joint, which has just been re-glued.

: Any thoughts? ideas?

I have to agree with Rich, Allan. Given the state of the bass as you acquired it, one has to be skeptical of the integrity of the assortment of strings you have. Using experience as a general guide, I suspect you do not have a true EADG set, but have duplicates of either an A or D string. Certainly you could string it up using their thicknesses as a general guide, in order to see how your project is progressing, but I think I'd invest in a set.

If you're planning on only pizz., and like a fat warm sound, Labella SuperNyls are around US$50, cheapest half-way decent strings around, though narrowly suited for that response (if the last string you described has distinct ribs, like an outside winding, it may be a SuperNyl). Other choices are in the $100 range, but without knowing your goal, I'd hesitate to make a suggestion.
