I have only played the Strunal with carved top/laminate back and sides, I would definitely go for it rather than one of the cheap Chinese imports (Palantino, Cremona etc).
In NYC that bass can be had for around $1400. If you want to get the bridge cut for adjusters and have a little set up work done you can, but they are pretty playable right outa the shop.
The only thing that would really stop me from buying this bass would be if there was a nice Kay or something around. Then whatever sounds best to you. I would go for the carved top (but not fully carved) rather than all ply, the sound will "ripen" as the top ages, and re sale value will be more.
Hear and accept it now, wood basses crack. They are repairable and good repairs do nothing to the resale value. Go look at the bass section of yer local orchestra and find a bass that hasn't been repaired...
