: Just read a thread from another webboard on amps for acoustic bass and one person commented the key to a great sound was a tube D.I. He said Dave Holland and Gary Peacock use one and I believe I read in Jazz Times last year that Dave uses a Retrospec Tube D.I. to send his Underwood signal through his GK and to the house system when he tours.Anyone shed some light on this subject along w.models,costs,etc.I guess this is a big thing in NY and is considered THE SECRET!!

I have a TubeWorks 4001 tube DI.
However the front-end is using solid-state components.
The 12AX7 tube is in the output stage, in cathode follower design.
You can feed it with instrument-level signal, or speaker-level signal, and you have a 1/4" output and an XLR output for the PA, or recording console.
Paid the equivalent of US$150 for it.
