Extremely Well Said, Ben! It is a WHOLE different instrument that, in a way, demands a great deal of respect from you. If you treat it right, and learn to play it correctly, you'll love it and get a great sound, etc. If you ignore the humidity, practice inconsistantly, and are careless with it, you and the bass will both suffer.
I played mostly electric 6 string for a long time and what frustrated me most about switching to acoustic was that I had to relearn a lot. You can't necessarily do on upright ANYTHING you can do on electric. Fingerings, everything is different. Speed and accuracy take a long time to develop. It is very tempting at first to keep playing electric on gigs & stuff, because it's more convenient and it is easier and it's your comfort-zone...but you eventually have to just go for it and make the switch. If you do practice a lot, be confident about it. It's not an easy switch, but it's not impossible either. :)
