Hi Colin, nice to see some other u.k. notes on this board,i was like yourself a complete beginner only last year.you might try local schools or colleges for tuition if you havent already done so.luckily my brother has played guitar and sang in a band for many years,so i learned a lot about chord changes etc. from him.he also `forced` me to play with the band at every oppurtunity.i am now a full time member playing 3/4 times a week,so it can be done ,even at my ripe old age!(they must have been really desperate for a bass player)
i am also looking for professional tuition but have an even smaller area to search (I.O.W.)there are some good books available in the classical style, and some excellent videos from the U.S.on bluegrass and slap style rockabilly.i have the Mark Rubin/Kevin Smith slap bass video if you`re interested,it only deals with right hand technique, but is very useful when you are ready for that stage of your learning.
p.s check out Bob Gollihurs pages for tons of links and useful info.
