Yeah, Mike - I think your ansking the right kinds of questions - but the answers lie in the styles of the different tunes you're playing and who you're playing them with - not what some blowhard like me says on a web page.

Walking lines can be chordal, scalar, chromatic, totally out there, or better yet - an intersting and stimulating mix of all those things and stuff I haven't thought of. It all depends on the context.

Just keep it swinging, like Dan says. What's swinging? Also depends on the context. Maybe some push...maybe some back beat. Do what feels right.
