: Hi.

: I've been wanting to try out an upright for some time now. However, they all seem so expensive... At least the ones I've seen. I haven't seen one under $2000. I live in a small town with a VERY limited supply of music instruments though. (The music store even went bankrupt leaving us with NO store :(((()

: Anyway... How low of a price can I go for if I get an upright for practising?

: Pointers to brands and such to look especially for would allso be greatly apreciated.

: Oh, and I live in sweden... so if you know of places where I can buy good and cheap upright here it would be even greater since I guess importing is out of the question considering how bad instruments wood and dilivery by boat mix ;)

Of course, I cannot know exactly what the environment for basses is in Sweden, so I will have to give you the advice I would give someone in the US. You may want to inquire with a local school -- very often schools rent instruments, or in any case rely on certain stores or people in the area for double basses. Since you have never played one, your best course of action may be to rent one, to conserve money and determine if it is for you.

Brand names in double basses are not that prominent, and even those that may be internationally know are often a "house" brand -- an importer who buys basses of varying qualities from different sources and labels them with their name.

You would be best off trying to get good advice from a double bass teacher or player, which would be more specific to your country and area.

I do not have any luthiers in my list from Sweden, but they are also a good source for used and new instruments, and you can ordinarily depend on them being set up properly-- something you cannot be assured of when buying from a store.

Good luck!
