: can anyone tell me some of the main things to look for in a good bass?i will be looking at many basses and may have to decide quickly on one.what are the main things that a good bass should have.i don't wanna get ripped off!! please help............thanks

First, trust your ears. Also, get away from the instrument and let someone else play it so you can judge its voice and projection from the listeners' perspective.

Know the market; the only way not to get ripped off.

Often an experienced (well-played, beat) bass can be a better deal than a new one - but that's a call only an experienced player should make. If it looks good from 20' away, who cares?

Repairs-- how many, where, and how well were they done? Buzzes and rattles that indicate bass bar or other problems.

Take somebody who knows their sh*t if you don't.

Get a trial period (in writing) so you can take it to a reputable luthier for a judgement.

Or go to a reputable luthier and make it clear that you will a) want to use him, b) intend to move up to a better bass at some point, so a) he will feel that he can count on you for additional revenue, and b) won't overcharge since he is likely to think he may have to take it back in trade for another instrument in the future ;-)>

Don't let yourself be forced into a spontaneous, non-confident decision.

Good luck!
