: I've been seriously considering picking up an upright bass for a while now, but i have a big problem (aside from the fact that they're pretty expesive)... I'm left handed. I've been playing other stringed instrument for a couple of years, and therefore I can't really play any other way.
: I looked into switching around a right handed bass, but i hear that it's just a bad idea because of the bracing and the fingerboard is sloped. Is this true?
: If it is, then are there companies who make lefties normally? The only way i can see myself ever getting one is by having it custom made, or buying someone's custom made one. There's just nothing out there that beats the huge bottom of an upight bass.
: Any help or info about this stuff would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
I am a true lefty but have always played the Bass the only way it was designed. I do not believe that string instruments are Left or right. In considering left handed string basses you will eliminate the option of sitting in at a jam session, learning from standard fingering books and methods, finding a teacher that has experience teaching you and on and on. If you are truely moved by the instrument (as many of us are) you will benefit more by learning it as it is designed.
It is a Royal Instrument to be Royally Regarded!!
