: I am wanting to learn bluegrass bass but cant really carry an upright in my ford escort!
: Are the a/e bass guitars loud enough to be heard well in an all acoustic jam setting?
: There are several on ebay I am considering lke the Epiphone El Capitan and the Fender BG29 as well as others.
: Are there any recommendations?
: Will a solid top have more volume than laminated?
: Are there any mid price models that have a less chunky neck?
I fully agree with Steve , there's no way you can get anywhere near the sound , not just in terms of volume but richness, depth and tone quality of an upright from an a/e bass guitar . Even amped they don't have anything close to the sound - they,re O.K for practicing if you're really cramped for space at home but that's about it !
As for transporting an upright in an Escort have you never heard of roof racks ? When I first started out I used to lash my old ply bass to the roof of the car and providing it's done properly and you have a good waterproof cover you shouldn't have any problems.Tie it on tight though - I've seen the results of a bass coming off at speed on a roundabout - it ain't pretty.Having said that there is absolutely NO WAY my carved bass is EVER going on the roof of a car.
