I have refinished 3 basses, one of them a 100+ yr. old German roundback. The process I use involves an alcohol - based varnish, an alcohol - based analine dye, a slow stripping & cleaning procedure, and a painstaking polishing technique. The tone of the bass probably improved; several other problems w/ this instrument were remedied at the time. The other basses I`ve refinished suffered no tone loss that I could detect. E-Mail me if you`re interested - Be advised that this process takes several months. I do not recomend refinishing very old or historic/valuable instruments, although Barrie Kolstein, among others, has been successful in that regard - I`ve spoken to him & read about his method; he uses an oil - based varnish similar to what the classic European makers used but his formula is a secret as far as I know......
