: Hello everyone,
: I've played electric bass for about 17 years. I plan to buy an upright and I have found a 1/2 sized laminated that sounds decent, feels great and is selling for a very reasonable price. Everyone I have spoken with says I should not get a 1/2 sized but a 3/4 sized. Could someone point me in the right direction? (I'm currently in a jazz quintet which plays local bars and restaurants)
Don't let anyone discourage you from buying the smaller bass,
particularly if it works well and you can get it at a good price.
The smaller bass is easier to play and transport,
especially if you are not physically large.
I'm very comfortable with my 5/8 size(feels like dancing with my 90lb girlfriend),but have big problems playing on my
teacher's 3/4 size(feels like dancing with a Hippo). As far as practical application is concerned,
the disadvantages of the smaller sizes are lack of volume and projection.
However, you will probably need a pick-up and amplifier to be heard with a jazz group anyway,
even with a 3/4 size,so get small and be happy.
