Could anyone elaborate on what constitutes "fruitwood"? Does this include poplar? I am gathering information to build a standup bass, at some point in the next year or two (all I have to do is finish the sailboat I hvae been owrking on for 13 mos.! HAH!) I have begun to price wood and here in the Bay Area it looks like the spruce and maple will run well over $1000 for even medium grade. Therefore, I am interested to hear about alternatives. I believe I recall reading that Pearwood was one such alternative for European luthiers, but does this mean wood froma an actual pear tree? Forgive my sophomoric questions, I am new to the upright bass world. But as proof of my seriousness, I bought and sold a Cremona and now have an Englehardt EM1.
