: i've just taken up playing double bass and would like some feedback about; tuning, learning scales, different ways to study technique, etc.
I have just resumed playing DB(as of this March) after a hiatus of 20+ years,in the last 3 months,I have learned the following:
1}Do NOT make the assumption that ability on bass guitar will transfer to the DB.
2)DB is a physically demanding instrument;along with small muscle groups, such as the fingers, large muscle groups in the legs, arm and trunk must get used to new tasks, and that takes time and repetition.
3)Get a teacher. We all know that a lot of the greatest guitarist were self-taught,but this monster aint no gee-tar. I found mine by asking the music teacher(a violinist)at my daughter's school.
4)If you have bought a used DB,have it set up by a luthier-do NOT attempt to do it yourself. If you have not yet purchased an instrument, get a teacher first, and ask him for help in selecting one. Also-there are firms who do nothing but supply schools with string instuments, and will rent you one, with an option to apply the rental to purchase.
