: The G string is louder than the rest of my strings why? Im terribly new at double basses and need help

Hey John, Welcome to the world of basslines, blisters, and backaches!

The loud G-string is likely due to something being out of adjustment - possibly the soundpost...or maybe the bridge being out of whack. Since you're new to this stuff, I would take the bass to a good luthier to have it checked out. If it's simply a matter of adjustment, it shouldn't involve a lot of cash and you'll likely end up with a much more satisfying instrument. If you bought the instrument from a dealer recently, I would think proper adjuesment would be part of the deal.

You can find out about the luthiers in your area by checking - which is, overall, the web-based knowledge mecca for bassists.

Another reason why one string might sound louder than the rest is if they're not all the same type of string. As a beginner, you're probably better off using a complete set of the same kind of strings. Sometimes people do use mixed sets, but that's when they're looking for a particular kind of sound, etc. This is something you may want to discuss with your teacher, if you have one. If you don't have one, you should get one.

Good Luck
