: I own a 30's Pfetszcher bass that has had the neck reset so the string length is shorter; 41". This bass is sluggish and chocked. I'm trying to get an idea what the orignal specs. (and by the way the tuners) were. Would the bass play better with the neck reset? is it worth it?

I am not sure what the string length is on mine but I can tell you that it is still a Plywood bass no matter what the string length is and the choked sound is typical. If you raise your strings higher off the fingerboard you will increase the response and open the sound a fair amount but you compromise ease of playing as you do this. Mine has a pretty good sound for plywood but it will never ring true as a spruce carved top does. I would rather see you save your money for a solid carved instrument than try to make your current instrument something it will never be.
