: : Just put La Bella gut G and D on my Engelhardt. Never used gut before. The G sounds great, but the D has a weird overtone when plucked open or fingered. I've had Helicores and Thomastik nylon cores on in the past and have not had a problem. I widened the slot at the nut and at the bridge in case I was not getting good contact there, but the overtone remains. Is this just a funky string? Is it the sound post position? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially if anyone can recommend things I can check and work on myself--the repair tech in my area is good but SLOW.... Thanks.

: Sure sounds like a bad string to me, loose winding or an out of balance string, especially if it sounds that way when stopped in any position or open. You can also try to confirm by playing the same notes on the A string and using a stethoscope to be sure it's not the bass but the string itself.

I don't think it's the bass--all notes on all other strings are clean. I did notice the D has a different look than the G. You can see the sort of cloudy spiral pattern on the G, which I've noticed on other gut strings, but the D is basically transparent amber--looks more like it's made of plastic or nylon. Is this normal? Lastly, if the problem is the string, how accomodating is the average retailer when it comes to exchanging strings? I got this one from a nice locally owned place, but I know most places don't like string returns.... Thanks a lot for your help, Bob.
