: Hello all... after 16 years of playing a fender jazz bass I'm about to make the transition to upright. I've narrowed my search to two options in my price range and local availability: a Knilling and a Englehardt s-9. I prefer the Knilling but I don't want to make a mistake when purchasing my first upright. Can anyone make a recommendation on which is better? Thanks - Jay

Jay like you Iv' recently switched to an upright bass and unfortunately didn't do my homework like you. I bought three basses before buying the Englehardt S9. The thing I like most about my new S9 is the incredibly small neck. I can tell you if you play one you won't go to anything else. I have never owned the Knilling but have played several at my local Mars store and the look nice but I don't think they sound any better or louder than my S9. I purchased my S9 from and they were a pleasure to deal with and extremely honest and fair with their pricing. Good luck and try to feel one before you buy. The S9 is obviously my choice. Phil
