: Hi... Iím from Indonesia. I started playing upright last year and didn't own any upright yet (I rented an upright with bent neck, really high action and big gauge steel strings, and have no other choice because its the only rental whom provide upright bass in my city).

: I'm looking for my first upright bass. The stores here only provide Korean, Chinese and Czechís strunal bass (and the prices fit my budget for now). I look at the Chineseís (palatino, cremona, etc), and the craftsmanship were terrible. So my choice comes down to the strunal and Koreanís universe sb90/sb100 bass. The Korean was cheaper than the strunal. So, I wanna ask for any opinion from this board about these instruments. Which do you think were better instrument?

: One other question (and its a real beginner one), what's a gut string? Can you bow it? What I saw around here was steel or nylon strings.

: Thanks

Try shopping at www.discountstrings.com (in the USA) They sell the Strunal
bass at a good price. I would choose the Strunal.
Also, I like the Pirastro "Obligato" string - they are a synthetic
core and work well for all styles of playing.

You also could try shopping at www.lemurmusic.com (USA)

Good luck with the bass, Al
