: I had the pleasure of visiting Hammond Ashley in Seattle last week (thanks, Bryce!), and the good folks there were kind enough to let me play everything in the shop. They have some marvelous instruments and bows.
: Two things really caught me attention.
: The first was a bass by Lakeberg & Baer. For the money, this is a great instrument, and sounds better than a lot of basses I've played for which people are asking twice as much or more. It's also very beautifully crafted.
: The second was an Eminence EUB, the first I've played. I travel so much on business that it really messes up my practice schedule. The Eminence (removable neck model) apparently can be broken down such that it can be checked in the type of airline hardshell case that is used for golf clubs. More to the point, I was quite surprised at how easily the instrument bowed, and the surprisingly good tone quality it produced without amplification (though the volume is low enough that you could play it in a hotel room without attracting complaints from other guests). It seems like something that could be used to keep the chops up while on the road.
: Both can be seen at the Hammond Ashley website.
The address for Hammond Ashley is www.bassviolins.com - they also can
provide superb repair / advice / and parts you may be looking for -
as well as strings. They always have a good range of basses in stock.
(new & used). Check it out!
