: Having played electric bass for several years, I have developed right hand technique applying the 'always alternate first and second fingers' rule used by Jaco etc. What technique do the virtuoso upright players apply to get their speed and dexterity?

It varies from player to player; there are very few rules in URB play, and some excellent players use only their index finger. I've always used my first three fingers, with the third finger especially being handy for moves from upper to lower strings. Of course, a lot depends on whether you are in "high volume mode" in a purely acoustic setting, when you're going for maximum sound and maximum finger grab, where it becomes a little less practical.

But that's just me; I hope others will share their knowledge of specific artists.
