Speaking generically, and speaking to more "modern jazz" as opposed to earlier blues, a carved bass is preferable to a laminated bass, and even moreso when it comes to classical. Carved basses *generally* have a more complex tone and even sustain. Laminated basses *generally* are more percussive in their attack, with a quicker and more dramatic drop off of sustain.

That said, I wouldn't rule out an Engelhardt for jazz- I played my old Kay (father to Engelhardt) for a lot of years in straight ahead jazz and even orchestra, and it did well. Laminated basses are more robust, and therefore less expensive to acquire and maintain, and were developed for that exact reason. While Engelhardt had some rough and inconsistent years for a while, they are putting out very nice basses these days, and I've sold quite a few, with all recipients quite happy with their instruments.
