You don't really "avoid" thumb position because, unlike an electric, the cutaway doen't allow you to keep your thumb on the neck. It does allow you a little more comfort when in thumb position.
Red Mitchell never had a full cutaway, but there are a couple of his basses that have a sort of arm sized oval "bevel" cut into the front shoulder of the upper bout, again for more comfort in the upper positions.
So if you have a plywood that you wanna try this on, get a luthier to do the cutaway. But don't think that it's gonna get you around having to learn thumb position.

And don't do it to a Panormo, or I'll kill you.
