Hi Tim :-)
As Bob G already mentioned, the setup is VITAL ! Especially if you are
"new" to uprightbasses. The instrument should be a pleasure to play
and not causing pain....
Helicore Pizz light,
I have a set and have tryed on different instruments. Imo
they are very good as I like a looong sustain. Metallic sounding ?
Yes maybe but it depends on the instrument a lot !
When fitted on my no name German 3/4 1920 carved, they sound
very hard and metallic :-( (Not good)
But when I put them on a Volkmann 7/8 from 1938 the sound
is fine. I have also tested the set on my vintage 1870 Schönbach,
this bass can also handle the bright strings and produces a fine tone.
I would recommend light strings initially because they are easier
for the hands. You can always get heavy strings later when your fingers developed more strength. Playing upright is a joy and should so be,
but can be spoilt totally with hard strings and a bad setup.
Bob G !
When are you starting the free exchange bass string bank ;-)
