: I think personally that the best way to learn to play the acoustic bass is without any pickup to develop the necessary power in fingers and forearm. You cannot play the bass in the same way you play electric bass. Listen to first jazz bass players : their sound is always very punchy and powerful : they learned how the get the most sound power out of their sometimes cheapy cheapy basses just by developing the right amount of power in their fingers and forearm. Early Duke Ellington and Basie bands where playing without any amplification at all. After a while you can use an amp to play more relaxed an comfortabely : but by that time you will have great flexibility and a punchy style due to "physical training". You have to get through the period of bleeding right hand fingers, but don't give up!
