: I've played (fretless) electric bass for 4-5 years now, and I've recently decided that I *really* want a double bass, the problem being that I know very little and, being 17 and a student, have very little money to spend on it. My part of the world (north england) isn't great for Luthiers, as I recently found out when I needed my neck planed. So. I need some advice on whether I can realistically hope to get one, how much I should spend (as little as possible, I know this is a bad attitude to have, but I've no choice) and whether anyone knows of anywhere that I can find one. Also, has anyone made the same transition as me from fretless electric? and was it hard?

: I think I'm quite serious about this, so I suppose my investment migh pay off some time in the very distant future.

: Cheers

Flook, have you had a look at what Overwater may have at their place in Carlisle,i bought my double bass from there(the cheapest)for 450,nice people to do business with and i am sure they do setup work.
I`ve had my bass for about 2 years and it has fared really well,no cracks or split joints etc.I also spoke to a guy today, who has a shop, plays bass and repairs them, who said he thought they were good value.
Oh, and it widens the scope of gigs you get invited to play at as well.
