The fingerboard may have been hard maple stained black (black leather dye works well). If the grooves are not deep and there is sufficient wood remaining, it's possible it could be dressed by a competent luthier. The fact that the neck is coming out also indicates it's time for a visit-- loosen the strings and have it properly reset.
