: I am seriously thinking of buying a new bass.It will be my first good instrument.AT 5000, I want to be very sure that I'm getting value for my money -- hence the need for advice --
: The bass was made at the start of this year in Germany by Ernst Heinrich Roth.It looks beautiful and plays well too.If anyone has any experience in buying new carved basses (not cheap ply ones), could they please help.I would also appreciate it if anyone has any info about this maker, or anything else that you might find helpful.
: Many thanks
: Rory

I'm not totally sure about the specific instrument you're talking about but Roth is one of those trade names that gets stuck on a lot of different instruments from differents shops. A lot of instruments labelled Roth are just student-quality stuff - but that doesn't mean the one you're looking at is.

Why are you considering this particular bass? Have you compared it to other instruments in your price range? If it truly plays better, sounds better, and suits your individual needs better than anything else that is available, then you should buy it.

If you're not sure, it's too soon to make the purchase. Getting input from other unbiased people - your teacher...other players - even folks who don't play the bass - people who can listen to you play different basses - or someone who can play them so that you can hear - all that may help you decide where your money is best spent.

If you like newer instruments, you might want to look into a Wilfur. I don't know about the U.K. - but for $8,000 to $8,500 in the U.S. (about the same as 5,000 quid) you can get a John Juzek or a Phretchner - or a really good unlabelled Czech or German bass in really first class nick.

I'd be really reluctant to drop that kind of money on a Roth.
