: : I know we've been over and over this, but my Realist & Polytone combo just aren't doing it for me anymore. Artificial, too much addded mwah, not warm etc.
: : I'd rather avoid the hassles of mics (I use one for PA shows). What really sounds natural for pickup and amp (don't want the amp to weigh a ton).
: : Thanks!
: Polytone amps are very dry sounding...that is probably where your problem is. I doubt I can find a finer sounding pickup than the Realist. Try Acoustic Image Contra. It is REALLY loud, and REALLY light! It has a very natural sound, that fills rooms nicely. You may also like the sound of a Gallien-Krueger MB150.
When it comes to carrying bass AND amp at the same time, the 30 lbs of the contra are still too much for my back to handle, as much as I love that combo. Right now I am very happy with a great combination, probably the lightest one you can get at the moment: a 5 lbs Acoustic Image Clarus Head which I carry in my backpack and a 12 (yes, twelve!) lbs brand new Gallien Krueger speaker (112MBX model, musiciansfriend.com sells it, I got them to sell a new one to me for $229). With a total of 17 lbs, which can be split in two separate components, my back is really happy now...no more second trip to get the amp after unloading the bass!! And boy, this head and speaker combination sounds grrrreat!
Just my $0.02,
