: So does Andy not want to play anymore?

: Anyway Jeff, before you take Andy's advice and "dismiss" Don's commentary, you should probably be aware that Don has played jazz with some extremely creditable players (Eddie Hazell and Vic Juris to name a couple), studies with an extremely creditable player (Michael Moore to be precise)
: and is in the bass section of the Ridgewood Symphony. He owns several wonderful basses, several more basses that I would be happy to own and his luthier also repairs, restores and maintains instruments for many of the premier players in the NYC area.
: He knows what he is talking about.

: As far as setting up the bass, it's much more than just fitting a new bridge. In the first place, you may not need a new bridge. You may just need to have the bridge cut for adjusters.
: There is some room for play with the soundpost and placement will affect the sound of the instrument. Strings are the easiest part of the equation, you CAN change those yourself. The neck may need re fitting, the fingerboard may need re dressing. And after all that you may still end up with a bass that is only marginally better sounding (but it should be "easier" to play).
: But it's more than likely going to be up to you to front the money for it. How many more years are you going to be in the music program there? If you have a few years to go, you may be able to but the bass from them ESPECIALLY if you have sunk a lotta money into setting it up (I know a number of people who

A reply to Don & Ed,
I wasn't going to reply to your comments as they have now lowered themselves to the point of being childish , but as you seem to be intent on decrying and denegrating my name , I will .
You obviously know each other and are members of a mutual fan club but to say any more on the matter would be to go down the same road that you are trying to drag me down . I'm sorry but I just will not do that.
I don't know about Ed but if you listen to Ed's commentary about Don ( which I have no reason to disbelieve ) then Don is obviously a talented individual who should be adult enough to give advice rather than just decry another persons atempt to help a young bassist .
The point I am making is that I thought that this board was there so that bassists could share information and help each other out but when I try and help out a young ( and hopefully up and coming ) bassist all you two can do is make negative comments and slag me off. All of which do you no favours at all !
Certainly if young Jeff is not sure of his woodworking skills then he definitely should take his bass to a luthier --- a local one should also be able to give him advice as to what actually does need doing before any work is undertaken, he could then get an estimate which he could take back to his school - it may be less than they think . As I said to Don in an e-mail I will only undertake relatively simple jobs as I know what my limits are and I have the advantage of having a luthier as a friend who gives me advice and help . All of this was ( amazingly ) ignored by Don when he decided to make my name Mudd by openly trying to make me look foolish in front of the whole message board.
At least I tried to help Jeff out - you two didn't even so much as point out Bob Gollihur's Luthiers List to him and if I were him I would appreciate friendly advice far more than two grown men backbiting another like small children .
I would also like to know what divine right actually gives you two the right to carry on like this - you don't know me , you've never met me , you don't know my playing experience or for that matter my experience in setting up basses . But at least I tried to help Jeff - you didn't.
That is about all that I have to say on the matter now you two can say what you want about me because , you see , you're opinion doesn't matter to me one iota ---- I know that I have helped people out in the past and will continue to do so in the future ---- their opinion DOES ( oh no ! --- capital letters and an exclamation mark ) matter to me .
Now go ahead , write whatever you want to , but do not expect a reply as I am not going to rise to the bait again as I wouldn't lower myself to your standards .
Write what you will ,
