: Very interesting what you guys have to say, and I seriously appreciate the input. But Ray Brown and Christian McBride both use 15"s and that is the kind of big deep sound that I'm looking for. As a point of reference, which player's sounds do you guys like? Do you think that you can get that same bottom with a 12"? The aguilar is rated down to 40hz, but that seems hard to believe. Also, how will a 12" (the aguilar perhaps, or bag end or raezer's edge) hold up as a complete rig for small rock gigs? Thanks.

Try listening to the A.I Contra - that's got the fatest , richest deep sound you could ever want and the main speaker is only 10" !
I know where you're coming from though as , until I tried one out , I didn't believe the Contra would be capable of doing the job as I had always used 15"'s before . My last amp ( I've still got it ) was a Trace - Elliot Acoustic Bass amp with a 15" speaker and it did the job but the A.I pisses all over it !
As for sheer volume in the rig I use I've got an extra power amp built into the extension cab ( this was done with A.I's help ) so I have effectively got twice the wattage of a standard Contra + extension on tap and I've never had to go anywhere near even half volume on it !
My main , regular gigs are with a 5-piece blues band but I dep' for all the local players ( obviously only when I'm not playing with my band)
and this can be anything from Jazz to full blown Rockabilly and the Contra has always come through with the goods whether it's been capturing the subtleties of Jazz or the ( totally unsubtle ) slap bass at volume for Rockabilly !
Give the Contra a try - it really is worth it and I think you'll find that a lot of people out there agree with me on this one .
Hope this has been of some help,
Andy .
