: : Hey all,

: : I play in a university big band, and I am looking at my options in terms of getting an acoustic upright bass. I'm kinda having trouble deciding what I want though. I'd like to know what you all would consider to be the best size for applications in jazz. 4/4 (full size), 3/4, 7/8, or any other sizes that I should consider. I'd like to have a pretty big sound with plenty of character, but I'd like it to be focused and tight. If I can't find what I want with acoustic, I may just go with an electric upright.

: : Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

: I really don't see any reason to look for anything other than a 3/4 size bass. Seems good enough for 99.5% (more than 95% of made-up statistics are true) of jazz bassists, so it's good enough for me .

: Seriously, I've heard nice 7/8 and 5/8 basses, only ever seen two 4/4 basses in person. I'd choose primarily on sound and ease of play - I don't think that a 4/4 is going to get you anything that you really need. As I've often said- this ain't the Olympics. You get no extra points for degree of difficulty.

: My .02 - YMMV

I played a 4/4 for years and loved it but it is difficult to play as well as carry around. I switched to 3/4 and I'm much happier. It's all about tone and playability.
