Having been on holiday in the Amazon a few months back, I came across a professor of music with a very unusual bass in that it had round holes in it almost as if it had been shot. On closer examination I could see that the holes were purposely drilled and I remember thinking at the time that they must have been drilled to enhance volume. It transpired that these holes were actually simulated bullet holes which had been drilled for the purpose of a prop in the 1950s film 'Some Like It Hot'. I was appalled that such a valuable instrument from the German manufacturer 'Himler and sons' was treated in such a dispicable way, but the professor believed that it was doubtful that this had affected it tonal balance. Anyway the music professor stated that the instrument was to be left to a childrens school there to promote classical teaching in the hope that it would bring inspiration to the native children of that region.
