Joe:

As our fellow bassists have recommended, relaxing is the key. Try playing w/the metronome on one and tap your foot on 1&3 o on 1. You may be thinking that tapping your foot on 1&3 is the anti-swing...well, it isn't. Swinging is about phrasing and rhythm. Not metronomes or foot-tapping. Try it. play very fast, tap on 2&4, the try 1&3. Tell me what happens. Also, think of 8 notes phrases.

Oh, besides, as you might have noticed, 1&3 is how western music is organized. Harmonic rhythms happen mostly on these 2 beats and , in 4/4, music is written in 2 halves.

: Does anyone have an insight as to how to sustain a steady beat on (very)
: up tempo tunes? Would practicing playing that way, using just a few
: (of the same)notes, be the way to get better at it?

: I've heard some bassists playing tempos in jazz that is nothing short of
: amazing, especially when they keep it going for a long time.
