I visited Hammond Ashley last weekend. The general manager, Bryce, has assembled a fine collection of good basses throughout the price range. The set-up they do on the Christopher is definitely first-rate. Their price is very good (esp. considering the amount of work they put into the set-up) and the bass sounds good. If you get a Palatino new, fresh out of the box it's going to need a lot of work just to be playable. Probably will need the nut adjusted, the neck shaved down, new strings, fingerboard dressed or re-set, etc.
