: Could anyone tell me where exactly a soundpost should be placed? I had work done on my bass recently and was told that if my sound post was move a couple of mm closer to the foot of the bridge that the sound would improve greatly. Howver, because of the arc of the body, I'd have to invest in a new soundpost, which will cost 65 euro. Do I really need to splash out??

Perhaps. A recent post in another board said "placed the same distance in from the G side F hole as the bass bar is from the E side F hole; then the SP should be 1/2 half its thickness below the bridge foot." Others suggest in line with the bridge foot and anywhere from 1/2 to 2 inches from the foot. The closer to the bridge, the more focused the sound.
