: Is an adjustable tailpiece a good investment? I have the opportunity to buy one at a local music store for 75 bucks. It is all steel I think. Is this a good idea?
Trust me on this one - save your bucks or something else you have no need for an adjustable tailpiece ! They are a throwback from violins where on some strings you tune as best as you can with the non - geared wooden tuning pegs then fine tune with adjusters on the tailpiece . This is neccessary on violins , violas and cellos but , as basses have precision geared machine heads they are completely unneccessary . Look around and see if you con spot one bassist with an adjustable tailpiece - I bet you can't ! As I said - save your bucks !
All the best ,
