: : : What is the correct procedure for adjusting bridge height using the wheels (loosen strings?). When these are installed aren't they supposed to allow leeway for raising and lowering? Thanks.

: : It is usually necessary to loosen strings a bit to allow a bridge to be raised. I would loosen a pair at a time to avoid taking too much tension off the belly of the bass, and in most cases only a small reduction in tension will allow you to raise the bridge. I have no problem lowering strings under pressure using the aluminum wheels on my adjustable bridges.

: : I've heard that the exotic wood adjusters made by Kolstein allow the bridge to be raised under pressure, but have no direct experience.

: As usual, Bob's got it about reason not to lower your bridge with the strings at full tension but trying to raise it will increase tension on the top - probably not that much but why take chances?

: I have a Kolstein adjustable bridge on one of my instruments and I've always followed the same rule...though I do seem to recall the Kolsteins telling me it's not necessary. Again, why take chances?

: Here's another little point - I seem to remember a luthier telling me to always make sure both adjusters are even with each other: If you give one a quarter exactly the same with the other one, etc. Makes sense because you want to keep tension on the top even. Also, it seems like getting the two sides uneven could cause the threads on the adjusters to cut into the wood in the bridge.

: Does anybody else worry about this or, am I just overly-cautious?
