Both styles are good. There are many ways in holding the German bow but I know of only one way to hold the french bow. Some have the opinion that it´s better use a German bow when you stand and the French bow when you´re sitting. I use the french bow standing because I nearly always stand while playing, even in an Orchestra. I think the best thing for you to do when you´re begining to play the Double bass is to find the coolest double bass player near you and study with him, always follow you´re strongest feeling
