: Hi,
: I am new to the double bass. I have been taking lessons with a French bow and I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of the French vs. the German bow.

: Thanks
: Arnoldo

It's easier for a beginner to maintain a German grip than a French grip, since all of the fingers are supporting the bow in the German grip. Also, some people find one kind of grip more awkward than the other when bowing on the E-string (though there's no consensus as to which).

After a certain degree of technical skill is attained, the differences between the two disappear. There's nothing one can do that the other can't.
