perfect pitch is the ability to discern very acute pitch differences. When you have perfect pitch you can teach your ear to identify and name any pitch. But it's a painstaking experience. I have a friend with perfect pitch who had to detune his ear when he started playing baroque. Apparently it wasn't fun.
Which is way most people say that an excellent "relative ear" is more interesting and practical unless you're working with synthesizers... Otherwise you just hear everything that's slightly off. And you apparently have to force yourself to stop thinking about note names as you listen to music...
