: How does a body go about installing the purfling? And furthermore...how whould he install the neck? like what joints to use and so forth?
: Purfling is installed with the aid of a purfling cutter, which is a small double bladed knife that cuts the initial groove around the plate, followed by a purfling pick, which chisels out the wood between the grooves. The neck is basically a mortise and tenon joint, with the mortise cut into the neck block. The angles are critical. I suggest you buy the book entitled "So You Want to Make a Double Bass" by Peter Chandler; it will answer most of your basic questions. Log on to the Musical Instrument Makers Forum, register, and check out their archived library, particularly the sections on bowed instruments and glues and finishes. Also, visit Bob Gollihur's double bass website; he has links to a couple of builders who have series of pice of the building process.
