An electronic device that boosts the signal from an instrument pickup or microphone to "line level" and matches impedances between the instrument/mic and the amplifier. Sonically, this results in a cleaner signal, ie. less noise and distortion. Most preamps also have an EQ section which allows you to boost or cut certain frequencies in the signal.
