: I am buying a new fully-carved string bass. I am considering a top of the line Chinese which cost $3,400 or a Wilfer which costs $5,500. Any thoughts about which way to go? Any horror stories about either bass?

I bought a top line Chinese Bass last year,
close to same price range as the one you're
considering, because it had a better tone
than some European Basses in the same price range.

The sound has gotten better in the last year, and
the only problem I've had, was a slightly loose
tuning peg "ear" which causes the open E
to buzz when bowed. I've corrected the tuning peg.
Everything else seems OK.
