A plywood can be a good deal if it is set up properly. You should be able to find a well set up one for ~$1500-2000. I don't want to insult Sarah's bass, but being in the NYC area tends to inflate prices quite a bit. My teacher is selling a 1940's Pfretschner (sp?) ply to a school for ~$1200, which was the value placed on it by a reputable luthier. Look around and you can find deals, but be aware that set-up can be a signifigant amount of the cost. It is very common to hear of people buying an $800 bass on E-bay and spending $1500 to make it play well.
