: Does anybody know what year Serial number 002806 may have been made. Also I have heard that the plastic these basses are made of emits a foul odor as it breaks down. Is it still worth purchasing a '66 or would it be better to get something like an Azola vintage re-issue.
I would personally recommend one of the reissues, unless you prefer/need the big thump of the old ones for Latin or similar music. I owned one 20 years ago and sold it due to the fact that is a "thump machine," and recently exchanged emails with a guy who updated his with new pickups -- and found that it still didn't have much sustain.
The Azola reissues are very nice, and there are a lot of other EUBs out there. I list over a hundred in my Double Bass Links Page at http://www.urbbob.com/basslink.html and am a dealer for Eminence EUBs, a hollow body similar in size to the Baby Bass, but closer in spirit to a regular string bass.
