There is a great deal of difference, and there are few true acoustic bass guitars that can actually compete with one or more acoustic guitars (especially under $1000) -- you would be better served by purchasing an electric guitar. You may want to consider less "electric-looking" bass guitars -- Dean makes a Rhapsody bass (model HB) with semi-hollow construction, and while the body lends little to the sound, it does have a more acoustic look, but would still handle any rock tune. I picked up one on a lark, and have been very pleased with it, in spite of the fact that I have other basses that are much more expensive. It's just an example, but they are pretty cheap and very playable.

BTW, despite the possibly misleading name, this board is for upright bass players; you may want to visit talkbass.com in the electric section, and pose your question there.
