: okay I just got my bass, it's a Strunal 5/20- really nice instrument... anyways I have a lot of time this summer to work on playing it before school starts, but I"m primarily going to be teaching myself -with a little help from my dad here and there and poss. a little help from a friend... the draw backs- my dad hasn't played since college and my friend won't be back till later in the summer -so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips on how to start and get comfortable with the bass or any suggetions with practicing in general. Thanks in advance.

Even if you only have the $$ for a couple lessons, you may be better off getting a launch from a legit teacher, unless your father was formally trained and can get you started off on the right foot. URB is a physical instrument, and it's best to get the right habits established right off in order to prevent injury and promote the good technique that will allow you to progress over time.

Unlearning bad habits can be difficult, take it from one who knows ;-)
