: I am considering changes from using D'addario Helicore hybrids to Pirastro Obligatos. Has anyone used both? How are they alike, how do they differ, and what are pros and cons for both.

They are quite a bit different; I have a set of the Hybrids on my Eminence electric upright bass and have had Obligatos on my Kay, which currently has Corelli 370F on it.

The Obligatos definitely have more of an "old school" sound- I believe Pirastro's objective was to emulate a gut string feel and sound, and they did so IMHO. They are perhaps a little stiffer than the Hybrids, probably due to their solid core, and their surface is smoother, and they are easier to bow, with a smoother sound. They have a somewhat "blunter" attack than the Hybrids, which seem to have more edge and articulation to their sound, and I recall that they had less sustain as well.

My opinion for what it's worth.

I am working on compiling and publishing the submissions of the string survey I've been doing the last few months, trying to get some help to sort it out and do the HTML work.
